Possible SAG Strike and Comic Con

Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] vdovault who made a links post about people's thoughts on how a SAG strike might impact Comic Con.

So, this has been on and off my mind since the WGA strike. How would a strike effect Comic Con? I don't know anything about the legalities of the contracts, but if there is a SAG strike, it doesn't seem realistic to me that SAG would let actors promote shows and movies made by the studios they are striking against. Now, I don't think this would actually mean there wouldn't be a panel for a show or a movie, but those panels wouldn't have any of the actors there. Which...okay, honestly, part of me has a morbid curiosity how this would effect Comic Con as a whole. As Frosty of Collider points out, it wouldn't impact ticket sales, as 4 Day passes are already sold out and Saturday tickets are sold out. I've been to the Comic Con of old, when most of the panels going on were comic studio related. There were fewer people and there was a lot of breathing space. It was really nice. That was in the day when I went to Con strictly to pick up cool merchandise that I couldn't get anywhere else and comics at dirt cheap prices. I've fallen for the love affair that Comic Con has with Hollywood, as the last couple of years I've been going to Comic Con to see a panel for a specific show and actors. It's not about the comics so much for me anymore.

Many people are in this boat with me and I really don't want to see them disappointed if things don't go as they had previously planned.

I know Tammy will be very unhappy but it's still San Diego right on the Pacific Ocean.
OG would still be there for REST.
I'm just happy to be there and celebrate my birthday with some of the DSC and some of the peeps from LJ.

UPDATE

Los Angeles, June 24, 2008 — Screen Actors Guild national negotiating committee met with the employers at the AMPTP headquarters in Sherman Oaks today. We have concluded for the day and will resume at 10 a.m. On Wednesday.

We have no further comment.

This is good. They are talking.

I do wonder if SAG would do some kind of waver, like with the SAG awards. I mean if really wouldn't be fair to all those people who paid. BUT, its a long way from June 30th and perhaps it will all be a distant memory by that time.

The WGA strike was devastating for actors, just awful. Agents wouldn't even take meetings with people - not to mention all the non actors out of work.

I like to think SAG will do everything possible to avoid this, because of what happened, perhaps even working with out a contract - at least to see how AFTRA votes in July - which seems to be what SAG is waiting for.

And as much as I think its a terrible thing to do - meaning encouraging people to vote against the AFTRA deal. And I just read it and it is a terrible deal - in regarding "new media" - which as an actor is most important to me.

In the end, I like to think its a lot of talk to get leverage from the producers, because a strike, right now, would be awful. As Tom Hanks said, "You will be hijacking this town"

The rumor is a vote to strike will never pass, besides taking a while after the 30th to have all the members vote, unless they find a reason not to get a vote from members, which I hear could be possible also. I know, because of the WGA strike, as much as it pains me because consent of clips and no more non-union new media is important to me - I would have to vote no to a strike - and I think most people will too.

But I really am NOT in the loop at all. Just my feelings.

Please, I don't want the SAG to strike. I have invested a lot of time and effort into this vacation. I will cry if SAG strikes next Tuesday. It'll be on my mind not seeing Milo Adrian Zach or Hayden. My parents will probably attempt to change my mind about the trip and then everyone else's vacation will be ruined since I have roommates. I have read articles saying they will strike and some saying that they aren't striking. I want to hang out, but is it worth the plane ticket and hotel if SAG strikes.

From all I've been hearing, the strike is unlikely, so hopefully you won't have to worry about it.

Found a good article with updates that make sense to read:

Looks like most people think there will be an extension, which I figured since AFTRA doesn't finish voting until July 8th or something and SAG will want to know what happens before they make their next move, but talks are on going, which is good.
