Okay, so I took Whisper's suggestion and came up with a letter. This is almost an exact copy of the letter I wrote to a local writer. He has an opinion collumn in my paper, The Daily Bulletin, and he has mentioned Stargate before. He's not a fan of the series, but he is a Science Fiction fan. So I'm trying to appeal to that aspect of him.
If you want to send out a letter to the editor or a writer at your local newspaper, that would be awesome! Try to appeal to the person who would be the most open to what you're doing.
As always, be polite and be appreciative of the newspaper's writer's time.
Everyone associated with Stargate: SG-1, from the fans, to the cast and crew, to the showrunners, have all been celebrating the show this season. It has reached a prestigious 10th season, making it the longest running (consecutive) Science Fiction show ever as well as in Guiness World Records. Last Friday's episode marked the 200th episode of this unique series. On the eve of this stellar event, however, Sci-Fi did something virtually unthinkable: they canceled the series. It is my understanding that the cast and crew was notified about the cancelation on the eve of a party for the 200th episode. The fans heard about this on Monday. Since then, there has been a downpour of fan outrage. This energy became quickly fueled into various fan projects that are now being used to show not just the show-runners, cast and crew of the series, and MGM and Sony the love and devotion they have for this series, but to Sci-Fi, Universal, and the executives who made the decision to cancel the series.
Fans are sending in letters both in support and in complaint, tissue boxes (a rift off the scene involving a tissue box being used as a means to contact someone in the first episode, "Children of the Gods"; this campaign of using a tissue box with the words "Thanks! Send more!" to show fans' interest was used for the successful Save Daniel Jackson campaign in 2002), and postcards, writing and signing online petitions, are making phone calls, making fliers and posters, holding podcasts, making Save SG-1 merchandise (such as t-shirts, bags, buttons, and silicon bracelets), everything necessary to spread the word about Stargate. But this movement is only happening online. To tell the larger audience and to get them involved, newspapers are an excellent medium.
I have compiled some important links which showcase the movements of the fans:
